报告摘要

Topic 1: Tackle the challenges of disrupted global logistic (1128)

Abstract:

Global logistics systems are increasingly vulnerable to disruptions caused by unforeseen events. This session is divided into two parts. In the first part, several major disruptions in global logistics over recent years will be reviewed, with a focus on their common consequences and challenges. Using the COVID-19 pandemic as a central example, the session will examine the key factors that disrupted the container shipping supply chain and the strategies developed to address these challenges. The lessons learned from the pandemic will also be summarised to highlight pathways toward greater supply chain resilience. The second part will turn to disruptive events at ports and explore ways to manage port uncertainty and disruption from the perspective of shipping lines. Specifically, a real-time schedule recovery problem will be discussed, incorporating both routine operational uncertainties and major disruptive events at ports.

Topic 2: Port decarbonisation & viability of rerouting to regional ports (1129)

Abstract:

This seminar is divided into two parts. The first part focuses on port decarbonisation, while the second examines the viability of rerouting shipping services to regional ports in a decarbonised world. Specifically, the first part introduces a multidimensional classification of emission sources at ports, designed to identify key contributors and enhance transparency in stakeholder communication. Emission reduction measures are then grouped into six strategic categories and mapped to these sources, drawing on insights from academic literature and industry practice. A time-phased roadmap illustrates how ports can progress toward net-zero emissions through the staged development and implementation of these measures. The second part explores the economic and environmental viability of rerouting deep-sea container services to regional ports in response to increasingly stringent regulations and the growing adoption of low-carbon fuels by vessels. Using the Port of Liverpool as a case study, total costs and CO₂ emissions across the container shipping supply chain—including deep-sea shipping, port operations, feeder services, and inland transport—are evaluated and compared under alternative scenarios.

Topic 3: Academic experience sharing and discussions (1130)

Abstract:

This seminar offers an overview of the academic journey in the UK, from PhD study to professional advancement. It begins with an introduction of PhD study in the UK system. The session then explores the publication process from three key perspectives: author, editor, and reviewer, including manuscript preparation, editorial process, common reasons for desk rejection, the roles of editors and reviewers. A few examples of research problem identification will be discussed. Finally, it examines academic career development in the UK, outlining career pathways and evaluation criteria. The seminar concludes with a discussion session, inviting participants to share experiences and reflections on challenges and opportunities in academia.

主讲人简介:

Dr. Song is a professor at Liverpool University Management School. He has developed research expertise in applying data analytics, mathematical modelling, artificial intelligence, and simulation-based tools to various supply chain, logistics and transportation systems, particularly in the area of maritime transport. He has managed several research projects funded by EPSRC, ESRC, Royal Society, British Council, Innovation Launchpad Network+, European Commission, and Chinese Research Councils. The goal is to advance the knowledge and assist industries to improve management considering economic, environmental and societal performance. Now, he is a senior Member of IEEE and associate editor of Transportation Research Part E: Logistics and Transportation Review.
